Dean & Britta On Fire by Madelaine Empson

“Galaxie 500 leaving the recording studio in 1988 with a song called Tugboat that exceeded our expectations. Getting that first ever 7” single and holding it in my hand. Playing Glastonbury Festival in the summer of 1990; we were the first band on, around 1pm on the first day.”

Dean Wareham says you don’t always know you’re experiencing a career highlight at the time.

“Luna supporting The Velvet Underground on their 1993 reunion tour – I could not have imagined something like that”, the Wellington-born American musician and actor continues. “Recording Luna’s Penthouse album in 1995 with a guest guitar spot by Tom Verlaine, watching him play guitar in the studio, just feeling like we had made a perfect album.”

And finally, with singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, and actress Britta Phillips, he lists “Making two Dean & Britta albums with Tony Visconti, getting to meet David Bowie who dropped by the studio and told us stories like how he came to write the lyrics for Fashion. More recently, making a Christmas album with Britta and our friend Sonic Boom.”

With remarkable careers behind and ahead, Dean & Britta have gifted listeners with a steady stream of brilliant albums, EPs, and soundtracks since their Luna days, including their stunning work for Noah Baumbach’s indie hit The Squid and the Whale.

As a three-piece band with drummer Roger Brogan, Dean & Britta will play the old Galaxie 500 songs at Meow on the 1st of December. “There will be reverb”, he declares.
