Sounds great! by Harry Bartle
On Saturday the 10th of December, Pōneke’s Cuba Street Precinct will host the first edition of Great Sounds Great, a one-day multi-venue music festival organised and run by the local Eyegum Music Collective.
Hosted across San Fran, Meow, Valhalla, Rogue & Vagabond, and Bedlam & Squalor, the jam-packed indie music event will feature 20 of New Zealand’s best acts. Co-curator and featuring musician Sophie Scott-Maunder couldn’t be more excited.
“We’ve been wanting to put on one of these multi-venue festivals for some time now, partly inspired by The Others Way in Tāmaki Makaurau”, she says. “The Cuba Street Precinct in Wellington is the perfect spot for an event like this as it is equipped with several awesome music venues all within a short walking distance. I can’t wait to see Wellington teeming with punters and alive with the sound of music.”
From heavy psych duo Earth Tongue to electric groove merchants Glass Vaults and the exciting new project from Dunedin-based singer-songwriter Kane Strang, the epic programme has a heap of variety. Other acts include local indie-rock trio Soft Plastics, Japanese/Māori/Kiwi indie-noise punk band Memory Foam, Lyttelton avant-garde musician Ben Woods, and many more.
“It’s almost Christmas time so it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the end of 2022 with some awesome local music”, Scott-Maunder continues. “We have some fantastic established acts on the bill but Great Sounds Great is also the perfect time to discover new performers and celebrate our fantastic venues, sound techs, and industry workers.”
