Who let the hound out?
Lord Baskerville is dead. Beside his body? The pawprints of a phantom hound, once thought to be nought but local legend. A singular crime demands a singular detective, and the web of mystery surrounding Baskerville Hall is so thick, so strange, that only the great Sherlock Holmes can take on the case. But can unflappable logic save Holmes and Watson from the jaws of the supernatural? For dangers lurk on the desolate moor, and the game’s afoot when the fog rolls in.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery classic The Hound of the Baskervilles first appeared in 1902, reviving the beloved character of Sherlock Holmes, whom Conan Doyle had killed off in a previous story. Such was the anguish of The Strand Magazine readers, 20,000 people cancelled their subscription! The story soon became one of the most famous ever written, and has since seen over 20 adaptions for radio, film, and stage.
Wellington Repertory Theatre is proud to present Jon Jory’s modern adaptation on the Gryphon Theatre stage from the 7th to the 17th of August. Director Ewen Coleman, who has directed more than 100 shows across the region, calls the American playwright’s 2010 script fast paced, noting it “encourages a focus on the characters and their relationships, unencumbered by the more traditional, extravagant set”.
With 11 actors working hard to bring a traditional story to life in a new, different, and exciting way, Coleman believes “Jory’s adaptation and our production faithfully recreates the pace and intent in the original serialised story created by Conan Doyle”.
